KNA1: General Data in Customer Master
SDKNA1 is the general section of the customer master. It stores the data shared by every company code and sales area: name, address, country, telephone number and the account group. Company-code data is kept in KNB1 and sales-area data in KNVV.

How the KNA1 key works
The primary key is MANDT plus KUNNR. Customer numbers are stored with leading zeros, so convert user input with the ALPHA conversion exit (CONVERSION_EXIT_ALPHA_INPUT) before comparing it with KNA1-KUNNR.

This is a curated subset of the most commonly used fields, not the complete table definition. A real system contains more fields and can differ by release and customizing, so confirm the definition in transaction SE11 before relying on it.
Example ABAP SELECT for KNA1
" Open SQL applies the client (MANDT) automatically, so it is not part of the WHERE clause. DATA lv_kunnr TYPE kna1-kunnr. SELECT name1, name2, land1 FROM kna1 WHERE kunnr = @lv_kunnr INTO TABLE @DATA(lt_kna1).
Modern Open SQL with host variables (ABAP 7.40 and later). Need a different field list or conditions? Build it in the ABAP SELECT Builder.
KNA1 in SAP S/4HANA
In SAP S/4HANA the business partner (transaction BP, table BUT000) is the leading object. Customer and vendor records are kept in sync with KNA1 and LFA1 through Customer/Vendor Integration, so read KNA1 for customer-specific data but create and change master data through the business partner.
Tables related to KNA1
- VBAK (joined on KUNNR): Sales orders where the customer is the sold-to party.
- KNB1 (joined on KUNNR): Company-code data of the customer, such as the reconciliation account.
- KNVV (joined on KUNNR): Sales-area data: sales organization, distribution channel and division.
Practical tips for KNA1
- The account group KTOKD controls the number range and which fields are required for a customer.
- Addresses are managed centrally in ADRC (key ADDRNUMBER), which KNA1 references through ADRNR. Read ADRC when you need the complete or multi-language address.
- To search by name, filter NAME1 with a pattern, but add another selective condition such as LAND1 to avoid scanning the whole table.
KNA1 FAQ

MANDT and KUNNR. Customer numbers are normally stored with leading zeros.
